Emotional Stress Release (ESR) is a techique widely used by Kinesiologists.  It is a simple but powerful way of defusing stress.  ESR uses acupressure points involving both the stomach meridian and the gall-bladder meridian.  These meridians are associated with anxiety and anger.  Lightly holding these points sedates these energies. In addition when we are stressed we tend to hold energy in the emotional back brain - fight or flight.  When we hold the ESR points we promote the flow of blood and energy to the forebrain - which allows us to generate new ideas and choices.

How to do Emotional Stress Release

Make sure you are sitting comfortably.  Decide on the issue that is stressing you.

  1. Place the first 2 fingers of your left hand VERY LIGHTLY above the centre of  your left eye and about one inch below the hairline. Place the first 2 fingers of your right hand VERY LIGHTLY above the centre of  your right eye and about one inch below the hairline. You may want to rest your elbows on your knees or on a table.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Focus all your attention on the issue involved. See the event in your mind's eye, hear the sounds and feel your feelings about it.  As you focus on the problem it's as if the emotion is burned away with a laser beam.
  4. After only a minute or two your thoughts will drift off onto other matters.  The process is complete.

Think about the issue again and notice how different it feels.

This procedure is even more effective when another person holds the acupressure points for you.  You can sit in a chair while the other person stands behind you with the pads of their fingers on the ESR points.  AND - the person applying the ESR technique will also feel more calm and relaxed.  A double-whammy win.
